Author, H. Besser, in his book, “Perseverance:
How To Develop It,” shares a Norwegian fable
about a man who left his hometown to rejoin
his fiancée. They were to get married when
he arrived.

On the way he chose to take a different route
because the direct route to his fiancée was
boring and lacked adventure. Eventually, the
man forgot about his original objective of
meeting his fiancée and spent years on a
journey to “no where.” More years passed before
he realized how far he was off of his original
path.

As he retraced his steps to get back, his
fiancée stopped waiting and married another.
By the time the man reached his original
destination, he was much older, alone and
poor and had nothing to show for his long journey.

Here are 6 things you and I can learn about
perseverance from the man in the
Norwegian fable:

1. Know what you want to achieve as it relates
to your health and stay focused on it.
The goal of the man in the fable was to
meet his fiancée in another town
to get married. The key to identifying and
achieving your goals and dreams is to know what
you really want. For example, you decide to
take advantage of the free six-month health
club membership you won at your company’s picnic
because you’re appreciative of the gift. However,
the results of your annual physical showed that
you should lose about 20 pounds. What you really
want is to look and feel healthier by lowering
your cholesterol and getting your body toned.
Know what you want and stay focused on it.

2. Expect distractions along your journey to the
goal and dream you desire. The man in the fable
knew the direct route to get to his fiancée, but
chose an alternate route because the one he was
on was boring and monotonous. In time that road
became boring too and he was looking for another
route. If you don’t keep your goal in mind, it’s
easy to stay in bed when it’s raining or
snowing outside even though you told yourself
you’re going to the gym three times a week
to tone up to feel healthier.

When distractions come, have a plan of action to
counteract the distraction. Your plan of attack
could include an accountability partner, mentor
or coach. It could also be to say your goal aloud
to affirm what you want to achieve throughout
the day. Know what you want and stay focused on it.

3. Take the time to think about why you want to
achieve your goal. The man in the fable was more
concerned about the journey than the reason for
arriving at his destination. Your reason for
accomplishing something must be big enough to
keep you focused on the direct route regardless
of what is going on around you. In our example,
ask yourself why do you want to feel healthier.
Make it a big enough reason to spark excitement
and passion. Your big reason might be that a
certain disease runs in your family and by being
more conscious of what you put in your body and
exercising regularly, you don’t have to become a
statistic. In fact your goal is to become a
success story so that other members in your family
see what is possible by looking at your life. Know
what you want and stay focused on it.

In a group of males, there are a lot of things that determines who leads the pact. Depending on the aspect involved, it is a normal situation when a lead male is designated to represent the group. There’s a lot of factors that are considered in knowing the presence of dominance. However, in most male groups, the feeling of dominance does not necessarily mean that the dominant male gets everything. Apparently, understanding the existence of domination in a male group is not a complex task. Psychologically, males are more than open with the idea of making someone ahead of them. The theory of association states that ones a person is acquainted to someone who is considered as a public figure, that person too becomes identified as such. Studies suggest that men are more liberated when it comes to discussing their sexuality with their peers. It is common for a group of men to compare and later on come up with an agreement. The man with the best experience wins and gets the nod of all members to be the first to choose should they decide to have sex with someone. It is normal for men to bet on who among them had provided their sexual partners the best satisfaction.

With sex as the central topic, it is no secret that men also discuss the size of their penises. Traditionally, the penis is the measurement of a man’s ability to have a great sex. In a group of men, the one with the largest penis size in considered as the master. He provides all the suggestions on sexual methods and the dos and don’ts of sex. When it comes to sex, the man with the largest penis size is the dominant figure and is often admired by his peers. In reality, the order in a male group with regards to sex is always based in the size of the penis. Such that the bigger the penis, the higher the position of a man in the group. Although foreplay and other factors are important, a big penis will definitely offset whatever weakness a man has in having sex.

Indeed, there are different measurements used to trace male dominance. However, the circumstances exhibit that the penis size is more than a reasonable indicator. In a group of men, sex is an issue that is allotted with a lot of time for discussion. In a situation when a group of men engages in a simultaneous sex, the group member with the largest penis size will always make the first move. Recognizing that burnout is a serious threat to the survival of your business is a critical step in preventing or bouncing back from burnout. Burnout steals your passion, the very passion that caused you to start your business. Without that passion, your ability and willingness to do whatever it takes to make your business a success quickly diminishes. You find yourself resenting your customers instead of wanting to help them. You dislike your employees because of their constant demands. You snap at your spouse when asked how your day went. And you constantly feel pressured and unable to relax.

Understand that you have two roles in your business. You need to play both the role of employer and the role of employee. If you worked for an employer who expected you to work non-stop, never allowing time off, paying you far less than you’re worth with no benefits, you’d soon have your resume updated and be out the door. And yet, that is the daily reality for many small business owners.

Remember, you are your employer. Are you creating a work environment of tyranny and maltreatment? Treat your help like you would want to be treatedincorporate benefits like flex time, comp time, and regular time off. Review a list of job duties to see if it’s a fair and logical distribution of work. You need to take care of the talent just as you would if you had actual employees. Your business depends on your health and sanity.

Preventing burnout is a critical piece of your business plan. How will you keep yourself fresh and engaged with your business? What do you need to do to keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed? What tasks are overwhelming you? Develop a plan to outsource those tasks or find easier ways to do them. What adjustments do you need to make in your business so you can take regular time off?

Often business owners insist they can’t take time off and can’t afford to hire help. Regardless of where your business is today, as the owner of the business you have the power to chart the course of your business. Like any other art, the art of spiritual listening comes with practice. If you’re like me, you’ve always wished you could stop paying attention to all the negative thoughts that come and find a way to just see things more spiritually.

Well, it is possible to learn the art of listening for our spiritual guidance. Sometimes it really does seem like the cartoons where a character has a devil sitting on one shoulder and an angel sitting on the other and has to choose which one to listen to. We may laugh at that, but I think the reason we laugh is because we feel it’s all too true.

Since I was a young girl, I always desired to be able to hear God more – to be more spiritually minded. I knew that it wasn’t right to be thinking bad or negative thoughts – even if I didn’t say them out loud.

Something that helped change my view on how we should behave and think came from studying Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. Jesus spells out for us exactly how to act and how not to act. We shouldn’t judge. We shouldn’t even hold grudges. Wow! How can we go through life without even holding grudges?

After studying over and over the Sermon on the Mount, I realized I HAD to choose where my thoughts were going to be. I could either let myself become angry, upset, hurt, etc., or I could force myself to stick to the truth. And by “truth” I mean it was my job to see everyone and everything as God created them.

Doesn’t the Bible tell us God made man in his image and likeness? That leaves no room for anything unlike God, good. Instead of holding on to the negative things about people or situations, it was my job to practice the forgiveness that Jesus taught. I had to see my neighbours (everyone) as God sees them.

So, how does God see His children? Good question. God could only see His children as the complete, perfect, spiritual image and likeness of Him. That means, in reality, each of us has no choice but to be complete, joyful, satisfied, harmonious, healthy, spiritual, and thousands of other good qualities

We have to make the choice – are we going to stick to the negative, un-Godlike thoughts, or are we going to make sure we are listening to the good, pure, true thoughts of divine Love, God?

Practicing this has made a huge difference in my life. I am now able to forgive so quickly. The past is in the past and things just don’t bother me like they used to because I know I need to live by what Jesus taught – forgiveness, love, compassion, etc.
