King versus Queen at WSOP 2008
Scandinavian online poker sensation Annette Obrestad will be playing poker legend Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson are set to battle each other September 26 in a best-of-three No-Limit Texas Holdem heads-up match that World Series of Poker organizers are billing as “King vs. Queen”.
At the time of this writing this match had not occurred yet, but probably will have done so by the time of its reading.
Obrestad is the youngest poker player ever to win the World Series of Poker Europe and youngest player to ever win a WSOP bracelet, at age 17.
As is common in this modern world of technology, the teenage phenom got her start playing online poker. She claims she never had to deposit money on any online poker site. Instead she made her initial online bankroll by winning freeroll poker tournaments from which she went on to amass several hundred thousand dollars in winnings.
As of February 2008, Pocketfives.com, a site that tracks online poker, ranks her number 51. She also has been the site’s top-ranked player in the past.
It will be interesting to see (or read about) this matchup between an extremely old school player who defeated some 30 people in a dusty Vegas casino to win the first ever World Series of Poker against someone who grew up in the internet age playing online poker.
When Brunson first started playing, poker was still so underground and shady that games he played in were routinely robbed at gunpoint. It certainly didn’t have the mainstream acceptance it enjoys today. Hopefully, this mach up of old versus new will live up to its billing.
