Using a Heart Monitor to Optimize Your Ironman Training

A heart-rate monitor can be an excellent training tool for a first time Ironman Triathlon hopeful. In a nutsell, following a heart-rate monitor program teaches your body to burn fat as opposed to carbs. It teaches you to be aerobic as opposed to anearobic.

For an event like the Ironman Triathlon, where endurance is paramount, teaching your body to burn fat is ideal for a very simple reason.

Your body stores a lot more fat then it does carbs. So during your Ironman Triathlon, if you burn fat and not carbs, you won’t use up your glycogen stores too quickly. Glycogen, simply put, is stored carbs. In a physically demanding event like the Ironman Triathlon, once you use up your glycogen stores, you will hit the proverbial wall and your pace will slow big time. Even walking will become extremely uncomfortable.

A heart monitor will guide you in staying in your fat burning range. There is a reliable formula for finding your maximum aerobic heart rate. The idea is to NOT go over this heart rate in the early months of your training. If you are in poor shape to start with, you will be training at a very slow pace at first. If the program is done properly, you will find that eventually you will be able to train at a faster pace and still stay below your max. Also, by staying out of the anearobic zone, your recoveries from training will be much faster and less painful. Better still, your chances of being injured will be diminished.
I have trained with a heart rate monitor for years and have had great success. I would highly recommend giving it a try.

If you decide to, here is how to figure out your max. aerobic heart rate:

The key number is 180. Subtract your age(no cheating).

When you begin, if your physical fitness really sucks(and don’t worry, we’ll change that)take off ten more beats.

If you have trained a few days a week for several years, don’t change the number.

If you have trained like an all-star for a few years and are in really good shape to start, add five beats.

If you are almost set to retire(over 60), add five beats.

If you are still in your teens, add five beats.

Now that you have that magic number. Your maximum aerobic heart rate, strap on that monitor and away you go. I would suggest using the monitor in the run and bike portions of your Ironman Triathlon training. It doesn’t work that well in the pool, because you basically have to stop to check your monior. Its pretty difficult to track while you’re swimming.

Use it on all your runs for sure and always start out running slowly for 10 or 15 minutes, then let your heart-rate get to within 20-25 beats below your max. If you are in really poor shape, it will seem very slow to you. THAT’S OK! Be patient. It will improve. Over the weeks you will teach your body to burn fat and like magic you will start running faster without going over your max. Here is how to do a test so you can actually see your progress. Do your initial test the first few days you start heart-rate monitor training.

Find somewhere(a track etc.)where you can run an exact measured mile. Warm up for 15 minutes and stay 20-25 beats below your max. After your warm-up, pick up speed so that when you hit the start line for your mile, you are right on your maximum aerobic heart-rate.

Begin your stop watch when you hit the start line. Stay in a very tight range for the whole mile. For example, if your max. rate is 130, stay between 125 and 135 through the whole test. The idea is to average 130–your max. rate. Stop your timer right at the end of the mile. Record that time.

In one month–not before–do the exact test again. If you have trained on a regular basis (4-5 times a week)and used the monitor properly you WILL see an improvement.

FOR EXAMPLE: If your first test resulted in a mile time of 9 min 40 seconds and your second test had a time of 9 min 15 seconds, then CONGATULATIONS! You are teaching your body to burn fat. YOU ARE BECOMING AN AEROBIC MACHINE! YOU ARE BECOMING FITTER! You are training at the very same heart-rate as when you started, but are able to run faster without any added stress.

Do the test every month(not every week). Your mile time will continue to drop and your fitness level will improve as well if you train on a reguar basis. After 4 months or so when you have developed a sound aerobic base, you will be able to start adding some anearobic work-outs. This is an indication that you come a long way. GOOD FOR YOU!

Should you decide to use a heart-rate monitor in your training, I feel sure you will improve your chances of finishing your very first Ironman Triathlon.

Tips For Setting Up Your Above Ground Pool

Don’t we wish these pools would have been on the market when we were kids! These pools put the plastic pools from my childhood to shame.

But there IS a little more to setting them up then tossing in the hose. Just follow your pools directions, but keep these tips in mind too.

1. Put down a layer of level sand under your tarp or ground cloth to make it more stable and resistant to tears.

2. Place the filter in a corner area of your square ground cloth so it is more likely to remain upright and away from the mower.

3. Your filter has to plug in, be sure and use a bright colored extension cord to eliminate trips and falls.

4. Always have a patch kit or two on hand, they do work well but you may lose a lot of water if you have to run to the store when and if you need one.

5. Get as many wrinkles out of the liner as possible starting with the middle.

6. Add the water slowly until all the wrinkles have been smoothed out. Too much water makes it hard, if not impossible, to work out the wrinkles.

7. Double check to make sure the drain plug is in.

8. Double check to make sure your pump hoses are secure and burp the air out of the pump before you plug it in.

9. Read the chemical labels and learn what to add when. It really isn’t that hard if you consistently take care of it.

10. Have Fun!! Be sure and supervise your children carefully and to keep the chemicals out of reach. Also remember that pool covers are meant to keep debris out of the pool and are not meant as a safety device to keep children safe. That is your job, you will be the lifeguard always on duty with a pool in the yard.

There are not seven specific tips, hints or secrets that are going to make you compete with Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods. However, by taking note of these seven very practical, surefire tips, you will improve your game; and maybe you’ll find yourself smiling more as you approach the green on the 18th hole. Grab a pad and paper, or click print and add these few to your growing knowledge!

Mentality
No great athlete or gamesman would hesitate to tell you that the vast percentage of success depends on your mental state. Are you focused? Are you playing for fun? Are you working a specific part of your game? Are you prepared? These are all questions worthy of asking yourself before you begin any round, or if you are simply hitting balls at the range. It is said that a mad player equals a bad player. Simply meaning, frustration will lead to bad play. Most people hoping to excel in certain events are often unaware of the level of concentration needed to find success. It is not only mentally, but physically exhausting to stay intensely focused on your game. Build upon your patience and mental toughness. There is no game that calls for it more than the game of golf!

Your Sticks
Once you’ve set your mind to the task, take into consideration your tools. Are you playing with the right clubs? Are they too short; too long? Are your grips too small? Playing with the improper clubs will lead to poor placement and a probable bad introduction of the club face to the ball. Those grooves in your irons are there for a reason! If you are hitting the ball with the toe of the club because you’re hunched over trying to take a good swing, it might be a good idea to slide a machete into your bag so you can hack through the jungle trying to find your ball.

Define Yourself
Without a doubt, every time you set foot on the links, you are coached by everyone and their uncle. Ignore it. You may want to consider it if they are a pro, but generally, they feel they’ve defined themselves and are going to impart their knowledge on to you. Just as easily as they may be teaching you quality, they will also help you develop some incredibly bad habits, hoping to improve your play in a scramble. Try different techniques and find your own game!

Utilize the Range

If you’re a beginner or feel a bit rusty, get back out to the driving and practice range. As a beginner, there is nothing that can turn you off more than paying for 18 holes and going through 36 balls. Hitting a little white ball with a piece of metal may sound and seem easy, but if you’ve done it once, you know, you need to do it a thousand times! Learn to hit and then play!

Don’t Overanalyze
I can’t tell you how many times a playing partner will step up to the ball and take practice swing after practice swing, getting their aim perfect, waiting on the wind and watching all four seasons pass by as everyone else is napping in the carts: Here comes the back swing…shank! The same player steps up to the next shot, not caring whatsoever, checks his lie, lines up, addresses the ball and pop! Within ten to the pin! Feel it, don’t think it.

Elements
In regards to play, consider your entire environment. If you have ever hit a ball on a windy day, you know how the wind can help or hinder you. If the ground is wet, stay out of the rough and keep your ball in play. If it’s a beautiful, warm summer day, take an extra towel to help absorb some sweat. And if it’s snowing, what are you doing on the golf course? Yes, it’s all common sense, yet commonly forgotten during play.

Take a Lesson
This is obvious. Find a pro you like talking to and pay them/barter with them for a lesson. They will do the analytical work and pass it on. It will offer you new perspective and will help you to improve on your own in the future!

Golf is a wonderful, social and solitary game. Enjoy the repetition of the skills you learn and all knowledge imparted to help increase your level of play. At some point, everything old will become new again. Greet it all with a smile and enjoy the constant challenge of chasing an impossible perfection! Maybe that’s the best tip ever.

Although in America, the sport is called soccer, throughout
much of the rest of the world it is known as football, and
what Americans know as football is called American
football.

Soccer first entered the United States through the upper
class; it was played by schoolboys and college men, but
there was not a formal soccer club until 1862 when the
Boston Oneida soccer club was formed.

Generally, this is considered the first club to carry a
regular roster, because until this time pick-up games were
the norm. The club was an elite subsection of the population
that would play against pick-up teams. Throughout the
four-year history of the Oneida Soccer Club, they never
lost a game.

Beginning in the 1920’s, soccer really began to gain a
