Keep it a simple token, possibly even a useful choice such as an edible fruit arrangement, and send it directly to the home with a personal note. It is always nice to know whether they are fruit eaters though before hand. Though they will surely have visitors stopping by to express their condolences, and having a quick pick-me-up nearby is always welcome.
